Ants enter homes searching for food, water and shelter, often nesting in gardens, wall cavities or beneath paving. They contaminate food, create nuisance trails and some species can bite, sting or damage electrical equipment.

Armyworms develop from moth eggs laid on lawns and plants. Their caterpillars can appear in large numbers and rapidly chew through grass, seedlings and garden foliage, leaving lawns brown or bare.

Booklice thrive in damp, poorly ventilated areas where mould grows, including cupboards, bathrooms and stored-paper areas. They do not bite but may contaminate stored goods and indicate an underlying moisture problem.

Bed bugs are commonly introduced through luggage, furniture, clothing or visitors. They hide near sleeping areas and feed on blood at night, causing itchy bites, disturbed sleep and considerable stress.

Adult beetles lay eggs in lawns, where the larvae feed on grass roots. Heavy infestations can produce yellow or dying patches, weakened turf and lawns that lift easily from the soil.

Carpet beetles enter through windows or arrive in infested furnishings and stored products. Their larvae damage carpets, clothing, wool, feathers and other natural materials and may cause skin irritation from their hairs.

Centipedes shelter in damp gardens, mulch, bathrooms and other dark areas while hunting insects. They are generally beneficial outdoors, but some can deliver a painful bite if handled or trapped against the skin.

Crickets enter homes from lawns and gardens through gaps around doors, windows and service openings. They create persistent noise and may damage seedlings, fabrics, paper and stored materials.

Cockroaches enter through gaps, drains, deliveries or infested appliances and multiply where food, warmth and moisture are available. They can contaminate food and surfaces, produce unpleasant odours and spread bacteria and allergens.

Earwigs hide in damp mulch, garden debris, cracks and outdoor furniture before occasionally entering homes. They are mostly a nuisance but can damage seedlings, flowers, fruit and soft plant growth.

Rats and mice enter through small gaps while searching for food, water and nesting sites. They contaminate areas with urine and droppings, damage stored goods and may gnaw wiring, insulation and building materials.

Spiders enter homes seeking shelter or following insect prey, while others may drift in on wind-borne silk. Most are harmless, but webs create a nuisance and some species can inflict medically significant bites.

Ticks and fleas are commonly introduced by pets, rodents or visiting wildlife and develop in lawns, bedding, carpets and animal-resting areas. Their bites cause irritation, allergic reactions and may transmit parasites or disease.

Termites travel underground from nests in the soil and enter buildings through concealed gaps, cracks and service penetrations. They feed on timber and other cellulose materials, potentially causing extensive structural damage before being detected.

Wasps and bees may establish nests in trees, gardens, roof voids and wall cavities. They are valuable pollinators, but nests close to people or pets can create a stinging risk, particularly for anyone with an allergy.

Scorpions shelter under rocks, timber, garden debris and inside cool, dark spaces. They help control insects but may deliver a painful sting when disturbed or accidentally handled.

Silverfish thrive in dark, humid areas such as bathrooms, roof voids, cupboards and storage rooms. They feed on starches and cellulose, damaging books, paper, wallpaper, photographs, clothing and stored materials.

Slaters and millipedes breed in moist soil, mulch and decaying vegetation and may enter homes in large numbers after rain or weather changes. They are mostly nuisance pests, although heavy populations can damage soft seedlings and young plants.

Springtails develop in damp soil, bathrooms, drains, pot plants and areas affected by leaks or mould. They do not bite or damage buildings, but large numbers can become a persistent nuisance and usually indicate excessive moisture.
